Franklin County Beekeepers Association 2011 Annual Banquet

for Franklin County Beekeepers and their Families


 

WHEN: Tuesday, October 4, 2011 — 6:30 p.m. at the

Central Presbyterian Church, 40 Lincoln Way West, Chambersburg (on the southwest corner of the main fountain square in Chambersburg, Intersection of Rt. 30 & Rt. 11.)


 

COVERED DISH DINNER - Each family bring 1 hot and 1 cold dish-and plates, silverware, etc. Beverages, dinner rolls, butter, honey & table coverings will be provided.


 

SPEAKER: Craig Cella, Pennsylvania Beekeeping Entrepreneur

and Writerfrom Logantown, PA will be speaking on the Honeybee Research on Queen Rearing and Selecting for Resistance in Managing Varroa


 


 

GOOD FELLOWSHIP - Please come. You need not be a member of the Franklin County Beekeepers' Association to attend. (Invite other beekeepers whom you may know, and who are not on our mailing list.

Fall Apiary Management Workshop

Fall Apiary Management Workshop

WHEN: Tuesday, August 23rd, 6:00 pm till dusk

WHERE: Richard Paine's Apiary,1020 Swamp Fox Rd.(375-2352). Take Rt.316 from Chambersburg towards Waynesboro. Pass thru New Franklin and turn right on Rt. 914 (Swamp Fox Rd). Go 1.5 miles and look for his honey sign on the left. -OR- From I-81 take EXIT 10, (MARION). Turn east onto PA-914/SWAMP FOX ROAD. End at 1020 Swamp Fox Road. Look for his honey sign on the right.

WHAT: Make sure to wear the appropriate clothing-- veil, white coveralls, etc., long sleeved shirt, etc. Bring your chairs and questions, in order to get the most from this "hands on" experience. Invite other beekeepers.

NOTE: If the weather is questionable that day, contact Richard Paine at 375-2352 to find out if the meeting will take place.

How Environmental Factors Affect Honeybees Ability to Navigate and Communicate

Katelyn Dovey

While at Kutztown University, Katelyn Dovey did honeybee research with Dr. William Towne on how environmental factors affect the bee's ability to navigate and communicate with other honeybees.  Her presentation will be on this research that looks at bee's knowledge in terms of the relationship between the sun, landscape and skyline. You need not be a member of the FCBA to attend. Invite other beekeepers whom you may know

Beginning Beekeeping Shortcourse

BEGINNING BEEKEEPING SHORTCOURSE

The Franklin County Beekeepers' Association is conducting a five session shortcourse on beginning beekeeping for any interested beekeepers.  The Thursday evening classroom sessions will be on March 3, 10, 17, 24 & 26, 2011, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Franklin County Extension Office which is located at 181 Franklin Farm Lane in Chambersburg.  There will also be a field day at a local apiary on Saturday, March 26. Cost for the shortcourse is $35.00 per family.  Subjects that will be covered include an introduction to beekeeping, bee biology, beekeeping equipment, maintaining healthy bees, installing packages and apiary colony management.  Registration is required and is limited to the first 50.  You do not have to be a member of the Franklin County Beekeepers' Association to register.  Registration includes a beekeeping manual, disposable gloves, refreshments and membership in the Franklin County Beekeepers' Association.  For additional information or to register, contact Penn State Cooperative Extension at 717/263-9226.
