Directions:  From Chambersburg take Rt. 30 west for approximately 6 miles.  Turn right on Twin Bridge Road and travel 1.2 miles to the campground.  We meet under the main pavilion - Rain or Shine.

(after Greenwood Bible Camp).  There is a large green sign on corner of Mt. Cydonia Rd. for sand company.  At fork, bear right.  Mailbox (771 Mt. Cydonia Rd.) and driveway are on the right.  No other houses are on the right.

 

Make sure to wear the appropriate clothing-- veil, white coveralls, etc., long sleeved shirt, etc.  Bring your chairs and questions, in order to get the most from this "hands on" experience. Invite other beekeepers.

2017 FCBA Beginning Beekeeping Basics Course

The Franklin County Beekeepers’ Association is conducting a five session Beginning Beekeeping Basics course for anyone interested in becoming a beekeeper.  The Thursday evening classroom sessions will be on March 2, 9, 16, & 23, 2017, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Franklin County Ag Heritage Building located at 185 Franklin Farm Lane in Chambersburg.  There will also be a field day at a local apiary on a Saturday in April.  Cost is $40.00 per family.  For information, contact Penn State Extension at 717/263-9226 or by email at FranklinExt@psu.edu.  Subjects that will be covered include an introduction to beekeeping, bee biology, beekeeping equipment; maintaining healthy bees, installing packages and apiary colony management.  Registration is required and is limited to the first 50.  You do not have to be a member of the Franklin County Beekeepers’ Association to register.  Registration includes a beekeeping manual, refreshments and membership in the Franklin County Beekeepers’ Association.

                Dr. Kirsten Traynor of Flickerwood Apiary in Middletown, MD is the featured speaker at the Thursday, February 16 Franklin Co. Beekeepers' Assoc. Quarterly Meeting.  The meeting will be at 7:00 p.m. at the Franklin County Ag Heritage Building, 185 Franklin Farm Lane, Chambersburg, PA (next to the extension office).  Dr. Traynor will speak on “Bee Breeding Around the Globe.”  Dr. Kirsten Traynor & Michael Traynor of Flickerwood Apiary have met with bee breeders in many parts of the world to learn unique techniques to improve the qualities of their bees. Her presentation will describe how a club in Denmark teaches all new beekeepers how to rear their own queen, so they can start their first hive. She will also talk about her visit to Buckfast Abbey, where Brother Adam bred the unique Buckfast bee. Dr. Kirsten Traynor highlights some of the best aspects of bee breeding they’ve studied in their world travels.

                Dr. Traynor received the prestigious German Chancellor Scholarship from the Humboldt Foundation in 2006-2007, annually awarded to ten American leaders in their field. She and her husband drove over 50,000 miles throughout Western Europe to study the differences between European and American beekeeping, reporting their findings through 50+ published articles in national and international magazines. At the same time she interviewed scientists and medical doctors, gathering information for her book: Two Million Blossoms: Discovering the Medicinal Benefits of Honey.

                Fascinated with the social complexity of a honey bee hive, Kirsten earned her PhD in biology from Arizona State University. While a grad student, she spent almost a year in Avignon, France in the lab of Dr. Yves Le Conte as a Fulbright Fellow. She currently investigates how pesticides impact honey bee health for the University of Maryland in the lab of Dr. vanEngelsdorp and is the editor of Bee World, published by the International Bee Research Association. We will be having a silent auction if anyone would like to donate bee equipment, tee shirts, hats, soap, ceramic, flowers, garden stuff, honey, pollen, gloves, tools, baked goods, ect. It doesn't matter what it is.  It doesn't have to be extravagant.

We will also cover mite counts and controls and what to do in case of dearth, spotting the queen and other pertinent information about your new nucs and building up a strong and healthy hive.  Call 375-2352 the day of the field day if weather is questionable.

Instructions:  Make sure to wear the appropriate clothing--long sleeved shirt, etc.  Wear light color clothing (no bright floral prints).  Avoid scented soaps, shampoos, body powders, perfumes, etc.  If you have them, bring your bee veil, white coveralls, etc.  Bring questions, in order to get the most from this "hands on" experience.  Call 375-2352 the day of the field day if weather is questionable.  BRING YOUR OWN FOLDING CHAIRS!

What to do if you are stung:  If you have been stung by a bee, wasp, hornet, or yellow jacket, follow these instructions closely:

 

1. Bees leave behind a stinger attached to a venom sac. Do not try to pull it out as this may release more venom; instead gently scrape it out with a blunt-edged object, such as a credit card or dull knife.

2. Wash the area carefully with soap and water. This should be continued several times a day until the skin is healed.

3. Apply a cold or ice pack, wrapped in cloth for a few minutes.

4. Apply a paste of baking soda and water and leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes.

5. Take acetaminophen for pain.

Leading Researcher to Speak on Honeybee Stress and Colony Collapse Disorder

On Thursday, November 12, 2015, Dr. Clint Perry from the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences at Queen Mary University of London will present a talk on his research into Honeybees at a meeting of the Franklin County Beekeepers Association.  His research has included studies into how bee stress relates to colony collapse disorder. This includes chronic forager deaths and how this can send the colony down the road to catastrophic results.  The meeting will be at 7:00 PM, November 12^th at the Franklin County Ag Heritage Center which is located at 185 Franklin Farm Lane in Chambersburg.  The meeting is open to the public.   You do not have to be a member of the association and there is no cost to attend. Dr Perry’s other research delved into the bee brain to determine how it assesses risk.  Dr. Perry is currently involved in setting up another research project in Australia.

Dr. Perry earned his PhD in Neurophysiology from University of Colorado. He is currently a Marie Currie Fellow at Queen Mary University of London.  This is a great opportunity to listen to one of the leading researchers into colony collapse disorder and see what research is being done to help our bees.

Have you ever wondered what is involved in being a beekeeper and working with honeybees?  If so, plan to attend the informational meeting, “Would You Like to be a Beekeeper?" on October 15, 7:00 p.m., at the Franklin County Ag Heritage Building, 185 Franklin Farm Lane, Chambersburg.  The Franklin County Beekeepers Association is sponsoring this introductory meeting on beekeeping for the general public.  In particular, it is for those who may be interested in starting their own hives and learning a little bit more about what is involved. The meeting will include a brief introduction to the honey bee, beekeeping information resources and time requirements for managing hives.   A brief overview of tools, equipment, start-up costs, and ordering bee packages will be presented.  The meeting is open to anyone interested in learning more about beekeeping.  There is no cost to attend and registration is not required.  For more information about the meeting or the Franklin County Beekeeper Association, contact Randy King at 328-9256.

SPEAKER - Jennifer King with Eversweet Apiaries, Located in Kearneysville, WV http://www.eversweetapiaries.com/.  Eversweet Apiaries was organized thirteen years ago to develop a business of producing honey and helping to increase the number of bees in the local area.  The business has grown into a bee equipment supply and information source covering most aspects of bee equipment supply and free bee education.  Currently, they operate an average of about 100 hives of bees all located in a 5 mile radius of Kearneysville. WV.

2015 BEGINNING BEEKEEPING SHORTCOURSE

2015 BEGINNING BEEKEEPING SHORTCOURSE The Franklin County Beekeepers’ Association is conducting a five session short course on beginning beekeeping for anyone interested in becoming a beekeeper. The Monday evening classroom sessions will be on March 2, 9, 16, & 23, 2015, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Franklin County Ag Heritage Building located at 185 Franklin Farm Lane in Chambersburg. There will also be a field day at a local apiary on Saturday, April 11. Cost is $40.00 per family. For information, contact Penn State Extension at 717/263-9226. Subjects that will be covered include an introduction to beekeeping, bee biology, beekeeping equipment; maintaining healthy bees, installing packages and apiary colony management. Registration is required and is limited to the first 50. You do not have to be a member of the Franklin County Beekeepers’ Association to register. Registration includes a beekeeping manual, disposable gloves, refreshments and membership in the Franklin County Beekeepers’ Association.
