Upcoming Beekeeper Meetings

  1. Fall Apiary Management Workshop Tuesday, August 24th, 6:00 pm till dusk

WHERE: Richard Paine's Apiary,1020 Swamp Fox Rd.(375-2352). Take Rt.316 from Chambersburg towards Waynesboro. Pass thru New Franklin and turn right on Rt. 914 (Swamp Fox Rd). Go 1.5 miles and look for his honey sign on the left. -OR- From I-81 take EXIT 10, (MARION). Turn east onto PA-914/SWAMP FOX ROAD. End at 1020 Swamp Fox Road. Look for his honey sign on the right. Make sure to wear the appropriate clothing-- veil, white coveralls, etc., long sleeved shirt, etc. Bring your chairs and questions, in order to get the most from this "hands on" experience. Invite other beekeepers.

NOTE: If the weather is questionable that day, contact Richard Paine at 375-2352 to find out if the meeting will take place.

Central Presbyterian Church, 40 Lincoln Way West, Chambersburg (on the southwest corner of the main fountain square in Chambersburg, Intersection of Rt. 30 & Rt. 11 ) for Franklin County Beekeepers and their Families


 

COVERED DISH DINNER - Each family bring 1 hot and 1 cold dish-and plates, silverware, etc. Beverages, dinner rolls, butter, honey & table coverings will be provided.

GOOD FELLOWSHIP - Please come. You need not be a member of the Franklin County Beekeepers' Association to attend. (Invite other beekeepers whom you may know, and who are not on our mailing list.)

ICE CREAM SOCIAL

The Franklin County Beekeepers' Association invites all association members and their families to a delightful evening at the ICE CREAM SOCIAL on Tuesday, June 15, 2010 - 7:00 p.m. at Twin Bridge Meadow Family Campground, 1345 Twin Bridge Road, Chambersburg, PA.

Members who have home ice cream makers(turners/churns/machines)make their favorite flavor and bring it to share with others. If you don't have an ice cream maker at home, that's okay! Just bring your appetite for good, homemade ice cream and spend a pleasant evening meeting and talking with other beekeepers and their families.

Directions: From Chambersburg take Rt. 30 west for approximately 6 miles. Turn right on Twin Bridge Road and travel 1.2 miles to the campground. We meet under the main pavillion - Rain or Shine.

Twilight Apiary Meeting

Beekeepers Twilight Apiary Meeting on Thursday, May 13th, from 6:30 pm till dusk at Richard Paine's Apiary,1020 Swamp Fox Rd., Chambersburg, (375-2352). This will be a follow up meeting for those beekeepers who attended the Beginning Beekeeping short course to discuss what has been going on in their hives and to ask questions. Any beekeeper who is interested in spring and summer apiary management is also invited to attend. Bring your chairs and make sure to wear the appropriate clothing. Rich will be opening the hives where he installed the packages to look at the bees. If the weather is questionable that day, contact Richard Paine at 375-2352 to find out if the meeting will take place.

Franklin County Beekeepers' Association (FCBA)


The Franklin County Beekeepers' Association (FCBA) consists of local beekeepers who share their information and experience. For more information about the FCBA, contact George Hurd by phone at 717/263-9226 or by email at grh5@psu.edu.


 

The FCBA:

*Helps novice beekeepers get started. Encourage and assist all beekeepers in keeping bees in proper condition.

*Endeavors to obtain bee industry favored legislation and works for protection of bee from environmental hazards.

*Holds educational meetings with discussions and demonstrations.

*Educates the public through news media and public relations on the value of bees in their lives and on the nutritional value of bee products.

*Encourages, promotes, and assists the PA State Beekeepers Association in its endeavors.

*Sponsors the Franklin County Honey Queen Program.

 
 

Franklin County Beekeepers' Association 2010 Meeting Dates


2010 Winter Educational Meeting will be Tuesday, February 23, 2010 - 7:00 p.m. at the Penn State Cooperative Extension Office, 181 Franklin Farm Lane, Chambersburg. 


 2010 Beginning Beekeeping Shortcourse will be held in the large meeting room in the Ag Heritage Building next to the Extension Office on the following Thursday evenings - March 4, 11, 18, 25.  Field day in an apiary would be March 27 at Richard Paines apiary. Cost for the shortcourse was $35.00 per family.


 2010 Ice Cream Social will be on Tuesday, June 15, 2009 - 7:00 p.m. at Twin Bridge Meadow Family Campground, 1345 Twin Bridge Road, Chambersburg, PA.

2010 Franklin County Beekeepers' Association Beginning Beekeeping Shortcourse


The Franklin County Beekeepers' Association is conducting a five session shortcourse on beginning beekeeping for any interested beekeepers. The Thursday evening classroom sessions will be on March 4, 11, 18, & 25, 2010, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Franklin County Extension Office which is located at 181 Franklin Farm Lane in Chambersburg. There will also be a field day at a local apiary on Saturday, March 27. Cost for the shortcourse is $35.00 per family. Subjects that will be covered include an introduction to beekeeping, bee biology, beekeeping equipment; maintaining healthy bees, installing packages and apiary colony management. Registration is required and is limited to the first 50. You do not have to be a member of the Franklin County Beekeepers' Association to register. Registration includes a beekeeping manual, disposable gloves, refreshments and membership in the Franklin County Beekeepers' Association.
